The Perth Mint first released its series of Australian Gold Kangaroo coins in 1987. Although presently devoted to one of Australias most iconic creatures, the coin series originally depicted the Australian gold nugget. It wasnt until three years after its inception, when designers changed the design from a nugget to a Kangaroo, that this coin series started to generate public interest. Since this design change, the Australian Gold Kangaroo coin series has become one of the most highly sought after pieces of currency by both coin collectors and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
Gracing the front of each gold coin is a stunning rendition of the beloved animal. Their designs have been struck using a special two-tone frosted technique, giving the artwork a richer sense of depth. Because the front artwork of the kangaroo coin has changed on an annual basis, collectors have a large selection to choose from. Previous designs have included single kangaroos in their natural habitat; mother kangaroos with their joeys; and even a pair of boxing kangaroos. The wide array of designs gives collectors the chance to create their own personal menagerie of marsupials.
